Prompt monitors, not rank trackers · read 24 Sept 2026
AI visibility tools are prompt monitors, not rank trackers
Tools that watch whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews mention you. What they actually record, what they cost per prompt, and why none of them can hand you a position number.
An AI visibility tracker runs a fixed list of prompts against a fixed list of assistants on a schedule and records which brands and sources came back. That is the whole mechanism, and it is worth knowing before you buy, because it explains both what these tools are genuinely good for and why none of them can give you a rank.
The unit here is the prompt, not the keyword. Every vendor on this page prices by how many prompts it will run for you each day, and the gap between the cheapest and the dearest is wider than anything on the rank tracker board.
Why there is no position to report
A results page has ten organic slots in a fixed order, which is what makes a position number meaningful at all. A generated answer has a paragraph, sometimes a handful of cited links, and no order that survives being asked twice. Ask the same assistant the same question an hour apart and the answer can name different companies in a different order, because the model is sampling rather than sorting.
So the numbers these tools report are frequencies, not positions: in what share of runs were you mentioned, in what share were you cited with a link, and which competitors appeared alongside you. That is a real measurement and a useful one. It is not a rank, and a vendor presenting it as one is describing its dashboard rather than the thing it watched.
What the tools cost, per prompt
| Tool | Entry plan | Monthly | Prompts tracked daily | Assistants covered at entry |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Otterly.AI | Lite | $29 | 15 | ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot |
| Writesonic | Starter | $79 | 50 prompts, 50 answers | ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews |
| SE Ranking | AI Search add-on | $89 on monthly billing, $71.20 on annual | not published as a prompt count | not published on the pricing page |
| Semrush | Starter | $199 | 50 | not published as a list on the pricing page |
| Ahrefs | Brand Radar AI | from $199 | prompt packages $50–$250/mo | not published as a list on the pricing page |
Read across that table and the spread is the story: fifteen prompts at Otterly.AI costs $29 a month, fifty prompts at Writesonic costs $79, and fifty prompts at Semrush costs $199 because you are buying the SEO suite as well. Nobody on this page is selling the same product at a different price; they are selling different amounts of overlap with tools you may already own.
Otterly.AI: the cheapest way to find out whether this matters to you
Otterly.AI's Lite plan is $29 a month, or $25 a month billed annually — the page describes annual as a 15% discount — for 15 search prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. Standard is $189 a month for 100 prompts and Premium $489 for 400; Enterprise starts, per the page, from 1,000 prompts.
Extra assistants are priced as add-ons rather than bundled: Google AI Mode and Google Gemini are each listed at $9 to $149 a month depending on tier, and Claude at $29 to $439. Extra prompt packs are $99 per 100 on the Standard and Premium tiers.
Fifteen prompts is not a monitoring programme; it is an experiment. For a business that has never checked whether assistants name it, that is arguably the correct first purchase, and this site earns nothing from saying so — Otterly.AI has no programme anyone here has verified, so the link is an ordinary one.
Writesonic: the widest assistant coverage at the top tier
Writesonic's Starter plan is $79 a month and lists 50 prompts and 50 answers tracked daily across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, in one market. Basic at $199 raises that to 100 prompts and 300 answers, and Growth at $399 to 200 prompts and 600 answers, adding what the page calls prompt diversification.
The reach argument sits at the top of the range. Writesonic's Enterprise tier advertises all 10 AI platforms tracked, and names them: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Microsoft Copilot, Meta AI, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews. Nothing below Enterprise carries that list, so if coverage of Claude or Grok is the reason you are buying, the entry plan is not the plan you want.
One honesty note about the pricing page itself: on 24 September 2026 the annual toggle showed the same $79, $199 and $399 per month as the monthly toggle, beside labels reading Save $240/year, Save $600/year and Save $1200/year. Those two things do not reconcile, so the monthly figures are the only ones quoted here.
Partner link, tagged sponsored and nofollow: this site is paid a share if you subscribe. The order of the board is arithmetic rather than opinion — monthly price divided by tracked keywords — so you can re-check it on the vendor’s own page in a minute.
The suites: an add-on rather than a product
If you already pay for an SEO suite, the cheapest route to AI visibility data is usually the suite's own module.
SE Ranking sells AI Search as an add-on at $89.00 a month on monthly billing or $71.20 on annual, on top of a Core plan that starts at $129.00. Semrush bundles it into the plan instead: its Starter plan at $199 a month lists 50 prompts to track daily and one domain for AI brand performance, Pro+ at $299 lists 100 prompts and Advanced at $549 lists 200. Ahrefs sells Brand Radar AI from $199 a month with custom prompt packages at $50 to $250 a month.
None of those pricing pages publishes which assistants the module covers as a plain list, which is the single most important thing to check before you pay. Open the feature page, not the pricing page, and confirm the assistant you actually care about is on it.
Five things worth checking before you buy any of them
- Which assistants, by name, at the tier you are actually buying — not at Enterprise.
- How often each prompt runs, and whether "daily" means once or several samples averaged.
- Whether it records citations with links, or only brand mentions in the text.
- Which country and language the prompts are run from, and whether you can change it.
- What happens to your history if you cancel, because a year of frequency data is the only asset any of these tools builds.
Where this sits next to ordinary rank tracking
For almost every site, the ten blue links are still where the traffic is, and a $129 rank tracker covering 2,000 keywords buys more decision-making than a $199 prompt monitor covering fifty questions. AI visibility is worth watching as a trend and worth paying for when a named competitor is being recommended in answers and you are not.
If you have not yet chosen an ordinary tracker, start with the board of rank trackers priced per keyword, and come back to this page when the basics are running. If you want the free half of the answer first, Search Console next to a rank tracker explains what Google gives you for nothing.
